Dole calls for a session to overhaul social security

August 31, 1982

Senate Finance Committee chairman Bob Dole, presenting President Reagan with fresh political trouble, called for a post-election session of Congress to overhaul the troubled social security system.

The Kansas Republican said it was urgent that the overhaul be completed before it could be caught in the political swirl before the 1984 presidential election. He made his call in a speech to the Sheet Metal Workers Union convention here an hour after the union heard Sen. Edward Kennedy warn that the Reagan administration would try a third time to cut social security after the election.
