Is this George Wallace's political last hurrah?
Wallace is running for the Democratic nomination for governor. But one pollster with a good track record predicts he will finish second, then lose in the runoff to state House speaker Joe McCorquodale Jr. From there pollster Ray Evans predicts the final winner will be Republican Emory Folmar, mayor of Montgomery. Blacks are still leery of Wallace's civil rights record, and questions about his health may keep many from voting for him. Republicans are encouraged by Reagan's win in Alabama and by the election of a Republican US senator in 1980.
But the Wallace name is still big in Alabama, and the former governor is determined to win yet another term.
