Anti-abortion law loses another round in Senate

September 15, 1982

Unless supporters of an anti-abortion measure can attract about a dozen more senators, President Reagan is in for another defeat on Capitol Hill.

The Senate refused to stop a two-month-old filibuster that blocks action on the Reagan-backed legislation. Senate Republican leader Howard Baker filed a petition for a third cloture vote Wednesday. The legislation, banning federal funding and insurance for abortions, is attached to the debt limit bill that Senator Baker wants passed by the end of the week. Sen. Jesse Helms (R) of North Carolina sponsors the anti-abortion measure.
