* Maine's football team is in shock, and for good reason. The Black Bears have lost in overtime for the second straight week. In most conferences. Maine would have collected two ties, but because of the Yankee Conference tie-breaker rules. Maine swallows heart-breaking losses to Rhode Island in six OTs and to Boston University in four.

* Michigan State, and not Michigan, was Notre Dame's opponent in "The Game of the Century" mentioned in this space a week ago. The 1966 contest is perhaps college football's most famous tie. Notre Dame took a lot of flak for sitting on the ball in the last minutes. What some people forget is that the tying field goal that began the fourth quarter and that Notre Dame had lost the services of starting QB Terry Hanratty, who was injured in the first half.

* Milestones: Northwestern ended its record losing streak at 34 games by beating Northern Illinois 31-6. . . Southern Cal ended Oklahoma's record of 181 games without a shutout by blanking the Sooners 12-0. . . Grambling State's Eddie Robinson has joined Alabama's Bear Bryant as the only other active coach with 300 career victories. . . Michigan's back-to-back losses to Notre Dame and UCLA mark only the third time since 1969 that consecutive defeats have been handed to Bo Schembechler-coached Wolverine squads. . . Pennsylvania's two-game winning streak is the first for the Quakers since 1974.
