Times are tough for Solidarity.

Pro-Solidarity strikes fizzled at major Polish industrial centers this week - a definite plus for Gen. Wojciech Jaruzelski. Response at the Warsaw steel plant and the Gdansk shipyard Monday was minimal. The funeral of a young worker killed Oct. 13 in a protest at Krakow passed without incident. Jaruzelski addresses a meeting of the party committee, due in the next few days. Some committee members are known to have been upset by the way Solidarity was finally corraled. But now the general is expected to have no difficulty dealing with critics.

Jaruzelski may reduce martial law, or offer hope of its early suspension, to further defuse feeling before its first anniversary Dec. 13.
