UNESCO clears way for East-West news project

November 29, 1982

UNESCO conference delegates here approved a resolution to clear the way for adoption of a project intended to improve and expand international communications.

The resolution incorporates concepts promoted by East and West after a long-running battle about the social and political role of the press. Western delegations had argued that some of the phrasing in the project could endanger press freedom.

The project was warmly welcomed by third-world countries, who wanted a greater role for their own media in a world that they say has been dominated by Western media and international news organizations.
