A nationwide general strike shut down public transportation, restaurants, and shops Monday as millions of Argentine workers protested inflation-reduced paychecks and human-rights abuses.
Labor leaders said 90 percent of the country's 10 million unionized workers stayed home in defiance of a government ban and held the first general strike in 6 1/2 years of military rule.
