Shultz arrives in Paris, meets with Mitterrand

December 15, 1982

French President Franccois Mitterrand met with Secretary of State George Shultz Tuesday to reassure Americans that France remains a ''solid,'' though independent ally.

The agenda for the Mitterrand-Shultz working lunch included issues from Lebanon, where both the United States and France have peace-keeping troops, to the planned suspension of martial law in Poland. Mr. Shultz was on his fifth stop in a seven-nation European tour. In Rome, he talked with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Italian Prime Minister Amintore Fanfani and Pope Paul John II.
