Salvadorean officials try to quell military rebellion

A team of senior officers flew into this provincial capital Sunday to try to defuse the military crisis caused by the rebellion of the commander of El Salvador's northern Cabanas Province.

Col. Sigifredo Ochoa Perez said Jan. 7 he no longer recognized the authority of the Ministry of Defense. The rebellion, which Ochoa says is not a coup attempt, was prompted by an order transferring him from his command here to a post as military attache at the Salvadorean Embassy in Uruguay. This is the first open military rebellion in El Salvador's three-year civil war.
