Ossining, N.Y.
Inmates overpowered 16 prison guards and held them hostage Sunday in one cell block of the Ossining Correctional Facility, formerly known as Sing Sing, a spokesman said.
Officials of the facility said one guard was released overnight in exchange for medicine for some of the prisoners.
About 600 prisoners were involved in the takeover of Cell Block B Saturday evening, the officials said. They said the prisoners were armed only with sticks made from mop handles and that little damage had been done to the prison.
