January 10, 1983
Springfield, Ill.
The Illinois Supreme Court rejected Adlai Stevenson's request for a statewide recount of the Nov. 2 race for governor, the closest such contest in the modern history of the state. After his request was rejected, Stevenson formally conceded defeat in the election. Stevenson lost to incumbent Republican Gov. James Thompson by fewer than 5,000 votes.
