About 1,600 United States troops will join Honduran soldiers in exercises in eastern Honduras next month, the Pentagon said. They will be under orders to stay at least 10 miles from the border of leftist-ruled Nicaragua.
The Defense Department also announced that about 6,000 US troops will join members of the Panamanian National Guard for joint exercises in the Panama Canal area next month.
