El Salvador gets another 6 months of US aid

The Reagan administration told Congress the Salvadoran government is making progress on human rights and political reforms required to permit continuation of US military aid.

But it said human rights abuses continue and criticized ''the systematic ineffectiveness'' of the Central American nation's criminal justice system. The State Department must submit such a report every six months in order to continue the aid.

Meanwhile, in El Salvador, leftist guerrillas using heavy mortars Saturday repelled a 6,000-man army drive against rebel strongholds near the Honduran border, forcing US-trained troops to flee a key town, military officials said.
