32 Red Brigades leftists get life sentences in Italy

A Rome court sentenced 32 Red Brigades leftist guerrillas to life imprisonment for, among other crimes, the 1978 kidnap and assassination of Prime Minister Aldo Moro.

The sentence followed a 10-month trial that was considered the most important in Italy's decade-long battle against terrorism. There were 63 defendants, six of whom received lighter prison sentences of 16 years or less. They had cooperated with police in tracking down other Brigades members under Italy's so-called ''pentiti'' (repentants) law, offering lighter sentences to informers. Other sentences ranged from four months to 30 years. Charges against four defendants were dropped because of lack of sufficient evidence.
