300,000 Ghanaians beat Nigerian exit deadline

February 1, 1983

More than a 300,000 Ghanaians have reached their homeland after an overland trek across Benin and Togo to beat the Monday deadline set by Nigeria for unskilled, illegal aliens to leave the country. Certain categories of skilled, illegal migrants were given another two weeks to leave Nigeria in the expulsion of some 2 million West Africans.

Ghana and Togo agreed to keep their border post here open around the clock to speed up repatriation of the estimated 1 million illegal Ghanaian migrants. Ghana had closed its border four months ago to stop smuggling.
