Despite the recession, Americans are upholding their reputation for generosity. A new Gallup survey shows that the total average donation per family in 1981 rose to $475 from $358 in 1978. The well-to-do, perhaps looking for tax deductions, were the biggest givers. But they weren't the only ones digging into pockets. Families with incomes below $5,000 per year averaged $238 in giving. In all, 86 percent of Americans made a charitable donation.
Churches were the biggest beneficiary, receiving an average of $313 from 71 percent of Americans.m
