Israeli-backed Christians widen control in Lebanon
February 25, 1983
Beirut
The Israeli-backed private army of Maj. Saad Haddad expanded its control of southern Lebanon by occupying a town near the strategic Bekaa Valley. His army, gradually expanding its control, now occupies an area roughly matching the 28 -mile security zone demanded by Israel as a condition for withdrawing its troops from Lebanon.
The radio of the Christian Phalange said Major Haddad and his soldiers moved into Joub Jannine, 26 miles southeast of Beirut, and occupied the government building. The move took place as Lebanese-Israeli talks about withdrawal of foreign armies from Lebanon ended with no indication of progress.
