Truman wanted Soviets to fight Japan, letter says

Proof that President Harry Truman wanted the Soviet Union to enter the war against Japan was disclosed by a Truman letter made public, the New York Times reported.

''I've gotten what I came for - Stalin goes to war August 15th with no strings on it. . . . I'll say that we'll end the war a year sooner now . . . ,'' the newspaper quoted Truman as saying in a letter dated July 18, 1945, which he wrote to his wife, Bess, from the Potsdam conference in Berlin.

The letter, along with nearly 1,300 others, was discovered in the Truman home in Independence, Mo., after Bess Truman passed on last fall.
