Salvadorean rebels claim Honduran jets intervening

March 22, 1983

Insurgents charged that Honduran war jets were supporting Salvadorean government forces in northeastern Morazan Province. The rebel claims were the first accusing Honduras of using its French-made jets to assist Salvadorean government forces. But in the past the rebels had charged Honduran soldiers with aiding the Army. The rebels' Radio Venceremos also said 3,500 government troops - some US-trained - were making a sweep of the area. Military officials refused to comment.

In related news, the New York Times reported Sunday the US had some 150 intelligence technicians in Central America tracking Soviet and Cuban aid to the Salvadorean rebels.
