Key British defense sites blockaded by protesters
April 1, 1983
Greenham Common, Britain
Several thousand demonstrators blockaded two key defense installations here. The protest, one of the most ambitious ever staged against nuclear weapons in Britain, was part of a major protest against plans to deploy US cruise nuclear missiles here. The demonstrators sat in the road outside the entrances to the Greenham Common Air Base, a US base due to become the first European site to take the new missiles in December, and the nearby top secret nuclear weapons factory at Burghfield.
