Lech Walesa became the first recipient of Scandinavia's Freedom Prize for contributions to freedom and human dignity. The leader of Poland's disbanded Solidarity union, awarded in absentia, also said he couldn't leave Poland to accept Harvard University's invitation to give a commencement address. He feared he might be barred from returning home.
