US envoy Philip Habib wrapped up negotiations on an Israeli troop withdrawal from Lebanon. Israeli and Lebanese negotiators meet today (Friday) in the Israeli resort town of Netanya to put the final touches on the US-sponsored agreement, an Israeli spokesman said. Meanwhile, Lebanon Foreign Minister Elie Salam went to Damascus to discuss Syrian opposition to the document. The visit represents a crucial next step in efforts to get all foreign forces out of Lebanon.
Secretary of State George Shultz and Lebanon's new ambassador to the United States have expressed optimism that other Arab nations will pressure Syria to accept withdrawal.
