Senate bucks leadership on '84 budget proposal
May 13, 1983
Washington
The Senate defeated the Republican leadership's 1984 budget proposal by a 52 -to-48 vote. Seven Republicans broke ranks and voted with the Democrats in the rejection of the proposal, which would have preserved President Reagan's July 1 tax cut and set the increase in military spending at 7.5 percent. The vote left the Senate with two other plans to consider. One is backed by the Democrats, the other was cobbled together by Republican moderates.
