An American freelance journalist was detained by Nicaraguan immigration authorities for immigration irregularities, the US embassy said. Spokesmen said that John Mitchen, a US citizen reportedly working on articles for the Denver Post, was taken from his Managua hotel for failing to properly register identification documents at the hotel.
Meanwhile, Nicaragua claimed it repelled some 500 rebels in a major battle in northern Zelaya province.
