Cigarette sales decline as taxes raise prices

Higher cigarette prices have prompted Americans to cut down on smoking, according to a US Agriculture Department report. The study estimates that cigarette consumption for the year ending June 30 will be down 3 percent from last year.
A ''big jump in retail prices'' contributed to the decline, a department economist said. A major portion of that price jump was caused by higher federal cigarette taxes, he said.
