Leader of apartheid body resigns in South Africa

July 6, 1983

The leader of South Africa's Broederbond organization, considered the power behind the policies of the ruling National Party, resigned amid a dispute over government plans to give a minor political voice to Indians and citizens of mixed race.

The Broederbond's Executive Council said that Carel Boshoff was ''involved with a view which does not find the constitution (reform) bill acceptable'' and his chairmanship had become troublesome. The Broederbond drew up the blueprint for South Africa's system of apartheid.
