EC says US steel curbs violate Williamsburg spirit

The European Community condemned new Reagan administration curbs on imports of high-quality steels, accusing Washington of flouting the spirit of the Williamsburg summit meeting. The trading bloc's Executive Commission said in a statement that it was studying the possibility of a legal challenge to the tariffs and quotas.

Japanese officials also expressed regret at new steel import regulations, but added they expected the measures because of complaints from the US steel industry.
