Violence in Lebanon continues at 3 points

Gun battles, shellfire, and street killings brought the death toll in Lebanon to more than 20 on the fifth successive day of a new round of violence. Fighting between Christians and Muslims has been reported throughout Beirut, in the central Shouf Mountains, and in the northern port of Tripoli.

The latest killings came as President Amin Gemayel left the country on his way to Washington for talks. The US and Lebanon are working on a ''new approach'' to persuade Syria to withdraw its forces from Lebanon, Lebanese Foreign Minister Elie Salem said in a CBS interview Sunday.
