Physicists verify existence of tiny 'bottom' quark

Physicists took another small step in their quest to understand the structure of matter when the existence of one of its tiniest building blocks was confirmed by a team of Stanford researchers.

Scientists at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center confirmed the existence of the fifth, or ''bottom,'' quark and found experimental evidence suggesting evidence of a sixth quark dubbed ''top.'' Observers say that the theoretically predicted top quark may be found sometime next year at particle accelerators of the European Center for Nuclear Research near Geneva.
