New form of government proposed for Pakistan

Pakistan's military government, under pressure from opponents to step down and call elections, Thursday released a report outlining the ''Islamic'' form of government it wants to introduce.

This coincided with a government drive to mobilize support for President Muhammad Zia ul-Haq through demonstrations and announcements that he and other officials would soon visit the troubled province of Sind, center of the most violent protests.

The report said the president must be a practicing male Muslim with no record of activities against Pakistan or its ideology. He would be elected by federal and provincial assemblies whose members must also be practising Muslims.
