California law sets new energy-saving building standards

Realtors, builders and area developers in many states will be watching the effects of new energy-saving standards that have become law this year in California.

For new construction, the standard call for changes such as 2 X 6 studding -- replacing 2 X 4 sizes -- which is said to provide more room for insulation.

Another code change is the mandatory installation of double-glazed windows. Costs for the new legislation are expected to run between $3,000 to $5,000 for an average-size new home. But energy conservationists claim lower heating and air-conditioning bills will provide long-term savings.
