Marcos issues warning to Philippine protesters

September 23, 1983

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos said Thursday he would not tolerate anarchy in his country, a remark taken in the Philippines as an implicit threat to put the country back under martial law.

Mr. Marcos appeared on television to blame political enemies for Wednesday's clashes, some only a mile from his home. Police said at least 10 people were killed and more than 100 injured in the anti-Marcos demonstrations. The Philippine leader promised to deal firmly with future disturbances. But he said on American television that he did not intend to declare martial law.
