Britain's new Labour chief tries to pull party to center
Britain's opposition Labour Party has a new leader. After his landslide victory Sunday at the party's annual conference, Neil Kinnock said he will try to pull the Labour movement back into the center ground of politics. Mr. Kinnock also made it clear he wants Labour to get rid of some of its aging senior figures and put the emphasis on youthful leadership.
Kinnock wants the Labour Party to abandon opposition to British membership of the European Community. But he remains committed to nuclear disarmament and is strongly opposed to Conservative government attempts to reduce spending on the welfare state.
