US and Japan trade chiefs focus on auto-import issue

American and Japanese trade negotiators Monday failed to agree on extending Japan's three-year, self-imposed restraint on car exports to the United States. US Trade Representative William Brock and Japanese Trade Industry Minister Sosuke Uno are to meet again today for a second round, focusing on the car issue , which they would like to settle before President Reagan's visit to Japan early next month.

The present three-year pact, calling for limiting exports to 1.68 million vehicles a year, expires at the end of next March.
