Mrs. Lillian Carter, ex-President's mother

Lillian Carter, who passed on Sunday near the family home in Plains, Ga., was the mother of former President Jimmy Carter and a colorful figure on the American scene.

Known as "Miss Lillian" after the custom of the South, Mrs. Carter was known for her independence and outspoken, homespun philosophy. Her determined character was illustrated by her becoming a nurse over her parents' objections, her insistence on nursing poor blacks in the deeply segregated South, and her service in the Peace Corps in India at a late age.
