Fundamentalists see clash over church staff taxation

Fundamentalist preachers predict a constitutional clash between their churches and the government unless Congress approves legislation delaying enforcement of a law requiring all churches to pay social security taxes for their employees.

Critics of the tax plan - which replaces the current system of voluntary participation - told the Senate Finance Committee that hundreds of pastors will not pay the tax, claiming it violates the First Amendment guarantee of religious freedom.
