Reagan doesn't want USIA chief to resign

President Reagan does not want Charles Wick, director of the US Information Agency, to resign because of the revelation that he secretly tape-recorded telephone conversations. Mr. Wick has admitted recording phone conversations for several months, but said he stopped when he became concerned about whether he was breaking the law.

White House spokesman Larry Speakes said he thought Mr. Reagan ''generally would not approve of'' taping phone conversations. ''It's not done at the White House,'' Mr. Speakes said, adding with a smile, ''since 1974,'' in reference to Richard Nixon's secret taping of telephone and Oval Office conversations.
