Security accord near, Lebanese leader says

The Lebanese government has announced its formal agreement to a comprehensive security plan designed to bring a permanent end to fighting among the country's warring factions.

Announcing government approval of the long-awaited plan Tuesday night, Prime Minster Shafiq al-Wazzan said only a very few details remained to be worked out with rival groups.

The announcement followed weeks of discussions with rival forces aimed at promoting national reconciliation talks between President Amin Gemayel and Phalangist, Druze, and Shiite leaders.
