California law protects merchandise against counterfeiters California has new penalties for counterfeiting famous-name merchandise - whether in style, symbol, advertising, or other ways. Because of the vast and profitable deceptive trade in such counterfeit goods as aircraft parts, electronic equipment, watches, and designer apparel, the state has stepped in with stiff new legislation.
Until now, counterfeiters brought to court were charged with paying only for the loss or damages they caused. The new law allows courts to award triple damages. The legislation - the first of its kind in the US - allows plaintiffs to get court orders to seize counterfeit goods without advising the offending party ahead of time.
