New Greek law clarifies rights of working women

Greek women are guaranteed equal pay for equal work under a new law drafted by the Socialist government and approved by Parliament. The law also forbids employers to fire women for being pregnant and sets fines of up to $1,000 for discrimination in hiring policies.

One article, which drew criticism from communist deputies, reduces from 18 to 16 the age at which women may do dangerous or unhealthy work, bringing it into line with men. Opponents said the limit should be 18 for both sexes.

Government officials say they are committed to promoting sexual equality, but that ordinary Greek men must change their views before women really get a fair deal.
