Democratic-debate viewers rate Mondale the victor

One-third of the people who watched Sunday's televised debate among eight Democratic presidential hopefuls thought former Vice-President Walter Mondale won the exercise, according to a national poll by ABC News and the Washington Post. Some 13 percent thought Ohio Sen. John Glenn won, with 12 percent for civil rights leader Jesse Jackson.

None of the other candidates got more than 3 percent, and 25 percent were undecided in the poll, which had a 5 percent margin of error.

Among registered Democrats, 45 percent thought Mr. Mondale won, compared with 16 percent for Mr. Jackson and 11 percent for Mr. Glenn.
