Nothing covered, nothing hid

February 27, 1984

When Christ Jesus declared that ''there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known,'' n1 he was expressing a divine law of enormous significance. He was indicating that evil, in whatever form, cannot remain hidden, because God is good and infinite.

n1 Matthew 10:26.

Can't we also think of this law in a somewhat different sense - as declaring that no aspect of God's perfect creation can be forever covered or hidden?

The basis of all divine law is the true relationship that exists between God, infinite Spirit, and man, God's spiritual image and likeness. This relationship is not readily apparent to the human sense of things, because materialism - which is essentially an ungodlike conviction that limitation of any kind is real and incontrovertible - has covered it up and hidden it from us. But it is there nonetheless, and it supported all of Christ Jesus' acts of spiritual power. Inherent in man's relationship to God are infinite freedom, completeness, and perfection. And the spiritual fact is always present to be demonstrated as we probe through the ''cover'' of material sense.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes: ''The relations of God and man, divine Principle and idea, are indestructible in Science; and Science knows no lapse from nor return to harmony, but holds the divine order or spiritual law, in which God and all that He creates are perfect and eternal, to have remained unchanged in its eternal history.'' n2

Human existence seems to have us all living on the wrong side of the mist that went up between the true, spiritual account of creation as completely good, devoid of evil (see Genesis, chapter 1 and chapter 2:1-5), and the false, material view expressed after Genesis 2:5. This false view depicts God's man as both good and evil, subject to incompleteness, imperfection, and frustration. It's a view that can be progressively destroyed as we turn through prayer to the spiritual fact that man has never lapsed from the spiritual perfection established by God. God's man never needs to be changed; rather, the mist - the cover - always needs to be seen through.

What a help this law can be to all of us! And consider its value in the bringing up of children. The material view presents us with academic, social, psychological, and medical ''facts'' about our children that, in sum, tell us that they have lapsed from the perfection given to them by God. Merely human efforts to overcome or compensate for these ''deficiencies'' simply rearrange them into patterns that, for a while, seem to indicate progress. But any effort based on the underlying assumption that the image of a perfect God can have a real imperfection is doomed to the eventual frustration that attends all material conceptions. Understanding the spiritual truth of our children's identity frees them from bondage to the mist of materialism and progressively brings their completeness to light.

The material view of children falsely sees God's offspring reduced to immaturity, and increasingly subject to disease, addictive temptations, and youthful frustration. This view also falsely claims that materialistic forms of medicine, discipline, and so forth offer the only hope of raising these poor fallen mortals to a level where they can cope. Science, the law of God, reverses this false view and restores the proper, spiritual sense of creation.

At no time do we need to accept any argument of incompleteness, whether for ourselves or our children. While each individual is a unique expression of God, each is also, in his true selfhood, complete, possessing every Godlike attribute.

As we faithfully hold to this law through prayer, we'll find that no quality of God's man can remain covered or hidden. DAILY BIBLE VERSE Thow art my lamp, O Lord: and the Lord wil lighten my darkness. . . . As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buuckler to all them that trust in him. For who is God, save the Lord? and who is a rock, save our God? God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect. II Samuel 22:29, 31:33
