Slender
February 28, 1984
I like the word slender; It has a silver sound; It feels silken-smooth on the tongue. Slender are the blades of grass Nourishing the fallow soil. Slender is the birch satin-gray, haughty, Bowing to none but the breeze. Slender is the Iris bending To see its blue image in the lake. German schlanke sounds forceful; French mince seems cramped; Italian snello, proud; Spanish delgado, elegant. But there's a touch of splendor Surrounds the English slender.
