AT&T puts in-house computers on the market

American Telephone & Telegraph, free for the first time to enter unregulated businesses, introduced its first products for the highly competitive computer industry Tuesday.

Company officials told a press conference here that AT&T would offer six models of its 3B family of minicomputers with prices ranging from $9,950 for the 3B2 desktop computer to $340,000 for the top-of-the-line 3B20D superminicomputer.

Officials also hinted that AT&T would soon enter the burgeoning personal-computer market.

The company has been manufacturing the 3B line of computers for its own internal use for some time but prior to the divestiture of its telephone-operating subsidiaries on Jan. 1, was barred from selling computers.
