Nicaragua seeks UN frown on the mining of its ports

Nicaragua has convened the UN Security Council to press a resolution condemning the mining of Nicaraguan ports, Monitor contributor Louis Wiznitzer reports. The resolution also condemns military maneuvers in neighboring countries which ''create tensions in the area.'' The United States is not specifically named, although Nicaragua is concerned about CIA-supported ''contras'' seeking to overthrow its government.

The resolution will have no trouble getting at least nine votes on the 15 -member Security Council. It is not clear whether the United States will veto or support the resolution. A veto might indicate the US harbors aggressive intentions toward Nicaragua, one Western diplomat says.
