Arrested rioters have to do cleanup in Santo Domingo

Army troops forced thousands of people arrested in food price riots to clean the streets of the battered capital Thursday as the country showed signs of returning to normal.

The death toll after three days of rioting across the Dominican Republic stood at 54, with more than 200 injured. Nearly 100 stores were burned or looted in the rampage, which broke out over price increases for basic foodstuffs.

Government sources reported that 4,350 people were arrested during the three days of rioting.
