John Anderson won't run for president this year
John Anderson, the former Republican congressman who won nearly 7 percent of the vote in the last presidential election, announced that he will not run again this year.
His decision not to run for president will cost him $6 million in federal funds which would have helped to finance the organization of a new third political party. The absence of an Anderson candidacy is thought to benefit the Democrats, who feared they might lose some votes to a liberal Anderson, as happened in 1980.
Mr. Anderson, speaking at Yale University Thursday, said he instead will try to build his new National Unity Party into a viable alternative in the 1986 congressional elections.
