Reagan spurns Klan over its endorsement

President Reagan, in a letter released Tuesday, formally dissociated himself from the Ku Klux Klan, two weeks after spokesmen for the White House and the campaign refused to comment on a KKK leader's endorsement of Reagan's reelection bid.

''The politics of racial hatred and religious bigotry practiced by the Klan and others have no place in this country, and are destructive of the values for which America has always stood,'' Mr. Reagan said.

The US Civil Rights Commission met Tuesday to discuss Reagan's previous silence on the issue.
