House rejects bill to allow religious clubs in schools

The House rejected so-called ''equal access'' legislation which would have allowed student religious groups the same right to meet in high schools as other organizations.

The vote was 270 to 151 - 11 votes short of the two-thirds needed for passage under a shortcut procedure usually reserved for noncontroversial bills.
