End A-output, placement, five nuclear nations urged

The five nuclear powers (the United States, USSR, Britain, China, and France) were called on Tuesday to freeze the production and deployment of nuclear weapons, Monitor contributor Louis Wiznitzer reports.

The proposal came from the Parliamentarians for World Order, an organization that includes elected officials from 31 Western and third-world democracies.

Its call was publicly and jointly supported by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of India, President Miguel de la Madrid of Mexico, President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, Prime Minister Olof Palme of Sweden, President Andreas Papandreou of Greece, and President Raul Alfonsin of Argentina.

UN ambassadors from these countries formally presented the appeal to the permanent representative to the UN of the five nuclear powers.
